Do I need Neuro-Visual Rehab?

"According to the Brain Injury Association of America, brain injury is considered the silent epidemic because some brain traumas are not perceived as injuries, when in fact they are.  The lifelong effects can range from devastation to frustration for both the victims and family members.  Do you or anyone you know have any of these symptoms of changes after trauma." - NORA

  • Personality changes
  • Dizziness/Nausea/Disorientation
  • Anxiety
  • Change in posture
  • Difficulties with reading
  • Balance problems
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Poor concentrationWithdrawn
  • Sleep pattern changes

Many patients benefit from Vision Rehab at Bowersox Vision Center.  The above symptoms may be a sign of an underlying visual problem that can't be corrected with glasses or vision rehab.

What is the first step in a Vision Rehab program?

A comprehensive vision exam is necessary before starting rehab. Following the exam, we can determine what type of vision rehab is the recommended treatment for your specific symptoms.

Does insurance cover Vision Rehab?

A brain injury and associated symptoms is considered a medical diagnosis.  We will bill your medical insurance and we are a provider for most major medical insurances.  Just as at other medical visits, you may be responsible for co-pays, deductibles and non-covered services.  Vision insurance may be used for the purchase of glasses.

What is Post Trauma Vision Syndrome and Visual Midline Shift?

After a neurological impairment such as a TBI or stroke, mismatches between ambient vision and neuro-motor processing can occur, causing a shift in the visual midline.  This shift in visual midline can cause a person to shift his body laterally or anteriorally/posteriorally, affecting balance, posture, and gait.  This shift in visual midline has been termed the Visual Midline Shift Syndrome.

What are the Stages of Recovery following a Brain Injury?

Stage 1: Recognition (Realizing Something has changed)

Stage 2: Anger (Frustration with your condition and not knowing what to do)

Stage 3: Depression (Begins when the individual starts recognizing their challanges)

Stage 4: Bargaining (Increased independence and putting off reality)

Stage 5: Acceptance v. Healing (Do not accept where you are, but continue to strive for improvement)
